InterGrain is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Barley Breeder to be based in Perth, Western Australia or Horsham, Victoria. The role will involve working closely with the two existing Barley Breeders to continue the growth of the successful Barley Program.
The role:
- Leading the germplasm development program, including the development of both trait specific assays and deployable marker systems
- Research and application of new genomic and phenomics technologies into the breeding strategy
- Interaction with service providers including molecular biologists, physiologists and trial contractors
- Regular interaction with our research partners & our marketing team
- Opportunity to develop and lead research partnerships as well as regular engagement in current research projects
- Represent and promote InterGrain at industry events
- Working closely with lead breeder on short and long term strategy breeding program
InterGrain is open to applications from both experienced midcareer breeders and aspiring plant breeders. (Note early career applicants will be limited to being located in Perth, WA).
You will need to be reliable and possess excellent planning, oral and written communication skills. Applicants will need to be disciplined with a strong work ethic and willing to undertake frequent travel.
Selection criteria:
- Tertiary qualifications in plant breeding or genetics, with a PhD in these fields strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in applied field- based plant breeding, including the planning and management of field trials, assessment of disease resistances and evaluation of grain quality.
- High level statistical skills, including experience in data management, trial design and analysis. Previous experience in ASRE ml-R is highly advantageous.
- Excellent knowledge of genomic and phenomic technologies and their application in breeding programs.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with industry to identify and prioritise industry relevant breeding priorities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, effective interpersonal skills, and an ability to work as a member of a team.
- High level organisational skills, and strong staff management capabilities.
- High level of self-motivation and initiative including the ability to work independently.
- A current driver’s licence
