SOUTHERN NOODLE WHEAT TRIALS SHOW PROMISE
InterGrain Chief CL Plus a Clearfield® Leader
Chief CL Plus is another feather in InterGrain’s Cap as the company’s newest Clearfield® Plus wheat variety, and is excited to announce receipt of an APW classification in the southern region (SA/VIC).
In 2017 InterGrain’s Seedclub members will be producing production crops for sale to resellers and growers in 2018. Given the expected demand for the variety, InterGrain strongly encourages growers and resellers to place orders with Seedclub members as early as possible to assist with production crop planning.
According to InterGrain Wheat Breeder Michael Quinn, InterGrain has been trialing Chief CL Plus within its program and National Variety Trials for several years and excitedly watching its performance due to its excellent yield potential.
Single year NVT yield data indicates Chief CL Plus is on average 10 per cent higher yielding than Grenade CL Plus and, on average, equivalent to Mace across SA.
Chief CL Plus is a mid-maturing line and it has very good yellow leaf spot resistance, coupled with an effective disease resistance package.
Dr Quinn believes that with Chief CL Plus rated MR-MS, the new InterGrain wheat is “the Clearfield® Plus yellow spot chief”.
“Historically, Clearfield® Plus lines have been very poor for yellow spot and while growers have cleaned up weeds, they haven’t had access to good yellow spot resistant varieties in SA. Having Chief CL Plus solves both problems as it leads the market in this resistance in terms of recent releases,” he said.
“Clearfield® Plus wheats have, in the past, been inferior yielding to conventional wheats, therefore limiting their uptake.
“However, Chief CL Plus signals a yield benchmark changer, while offering growers an excellent varietal option in its own right and the bonus advantage of Intervix® tolerance.
The benefit of a mid-maturing wheat with Clearfield® Plus tolerance is that it can be sown early or even dry sown, with the added subsequent convenience of cleaning up weeds, including problem grasses such as brome, later in the program.
A Clearfield® Plus wheat, such as InterGrain’s Chief CL Plus, also means growers don’t have to worry about residue issues from previous imidazolinone tolerant barley or canola that may still be in the system.
Chief CL Plus also has very good grain size (similar to Wyalkatchem) and this is highly advantageous if dry spring conditions prevail.
In summary, the key features of Chief CL Plus are:
· Highest yielding Clearfield® Plus wheat in SA based on single year NVT data
· On average, equivalent yields to Mace
· Mid-season maturity and APW classification
· Effective disease resistance package, very good yellow spot resistance
· Registered for label rate applications of Intervix® herbicide
